2 pounds spicy beef sausage
2 green bell peppers, seeded and chopped
2 cups onions, chopped
1 to 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
2 - 28 ounce cans crushed tomatoes
2 - 4 ounce cans diced green chilies, undrained
1/4 cup chili powder
1/3 cup molasses
1 tablespoon brown mustard seeds
2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
1 bay leaf
hot pepper sauce to taste
Brown beef sausage in the Dutch oven over medium heat. Drain off fat, leaving 2 tablespoons in the pot with the browned beef sausage. Break beef sausage into chunks. Stir in bell peppers, onion and garlic. Cook and stir about 6 minutes or until onions are translucent.
Add crushed tomatoes, diced green chilies, chili powder, molasses, mustard seeds, red pepper flakes, bay lead and hot sauce. Simmer chili for 1 hour or until the chili is nice and thick. Remove and discard bay leaf. Serve chili with biscuits or cornbread.
